About Imogen Hawgood

Imogen Hawgood is a painter based in County Durham. In 2020 she graduated with a degree in Illustration from Norwich University of the Arts. Much of her current work explores the icons of Americana and the idea of ‘the road’ as a transitional and symbolic landscape. Following a trip to Los Angeles, one focus has been the American Dream, and the mythic allure of the West, ideals embodied in the city of LA. Her recent work has included American landscapes and roadside imagery, and experimentation with light leaks and colour effects.

Her work is influenced by the visual language of film; cinematic approaches to composition inform Imogen’s process of creating new paintings, using a storyboard style of sketching to explore shape, lighting, and composition. Imogen is currently expanding upon an existing series of Los Angeles and Californian movie theatres paintings, which include the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood and Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Theatre.

Imogen has exhibited at the New Light exhibition at Scarborough Art Gallery and at the Holt Festival in Norfolk. In 2020 she was shortlisted for the ING Discerning Eye, John Hurt and Sworders art prizes, and in 2021 she was ‘highly commended’ in the watercolour category at the Broadway Arts Festival competition. Most recently, Imogen has exhibited artwork at the Vestige Concept Gallery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
